I needed to replace an older G-Shock watch that was starting to pretty beat up, and would probably soon need a new battery. The Mudman fit the bill.
Pros:
- Nice design, and very attractive. My old G-Shock (DW9052-1V) had some bright red lettering on it. The Mudman is all black and gray, plastic and steel, and very low profile. The old G-Shock had four metal pins around the outside that had a bad habit of popping out (only two of mine are left). The Mudman lacks these, and is held together with screws. Nice design.
- The atomic watch feature works great. The first night I had the watch I followed the directions exactly, placing it against a window, with the "12-o'clock" position pointing upward. I've since found that leaving it face down on the counter in my windowless bathroom works just as well.
Con:
- The countdown timer can be set for a maximum of one hour. Really, Casio? You couldn't find an extra 5 bits of memory to extend that to 24 hours?
- I've owned Casio digital watches for nearly 30 years. They're rugged, accurate, and great quality. But they tend to make poor use of screen real estate. Here's what I want to see on the front of my watch: time, day of the month (numeral AND name) and month. The DW9052 managed to get all of these in, despite wasting screen space on a couple of superfluous seconds indicators. But on the Mudman, I have to press a button to see the name of the day. Casio could easily have done away with the enormous display at top that indicates whether my watch was synced to Japanese, UK, US, or German time. Chances are I'm going to know what country I'm in. A little dash in the corner, next to the indicator for the battery or alarm setting, showing me that the watch has been reset in the past 24 hours would be just fine, and all that screen real estate at top could be used to show me the day's name.
The pros far outweigh the cons (I'm subtracting only one star), though. The number of features for the price is absolutely excellent. Give me a $90 Casio over a thousands-of-dollars analog watch any day.
Great product! If you need a watch that will take abuse, is reliable, and requires no user settings, this is it. The atomic clock feature works flawlessly, it is easy to read the display, and it is comfortable to wear.
Apparently, this is the only watch that can live through my husband's job and hobbies.
I have had the Casio GW9000A-1 for about 6 months, and am pleased with it. I will not call it perfect, but it gets the job done very well indeed.
I searched for a watch to replace an old Timex, and I had a well-defined list of requirements: digital face, 24-hour time display option (I work with computers), alarm, count-down and count-up timers, second time zone. I also wanted a black watch which could take punishment. I was looking for a watch costing under $150, preferably under $100. I also wanted a solar self-setting watch. I want this watch to last me 10 years (without maintenance), and it will be my only watch, I expect.
This watch meets or exceeds my requirements. It is not perfect, as has been noted by other reviewers -- I really wish that it could repeat on the count-down timer, and I have turned off the auto-illumination feature because it ran down the battery. (If I spent more time outdoors during the day, this would probably not be an issue.) I could wish for "American friendly" timezones like EST, CST, MST, PST, and I really wish that there was a GMT or Zulu timezone as well. (LON[don] with DST turned OFF gets the job done, but still....)
On the other hand, this watch has some nice extras. Multiple alarms are very nice, and 48 timezones are good, but difficult to remember, especially as 3-letter airport abbreviations are used. (I keep a list in my PDA.) It is also light, weighing about 2 ounces or 60 grams (including a compass that I mounted to the watch). I like the watch band, and have had no trouble with it to date.
This is not a toy or a piece of jewelry, but a tool, and I am very pleased with it. Different needs would have driven a different choice, but I believe this is a fine product deserving consideration.
Picked mine up right around Christmas time while they were on sale and with a partial Amazon gift card. Nice watch, not huge, tight buttons but thats a good thing to keep the mud and crud out. Great about having not to worry about batteries and also not having to set the time manually. All around winner and many compliments on it. I hope to put it through the torture test once it warms up outside. I'd buy it again...
After twice replacing a more expensive watch that touts itself as a Navy Seals watch I decided to go with the Casio G Shock Line. Reading the reviews here I settled on the GW9000A. This is a heavy duty big bodied watch- not glamorous but highly functional that keeps accurate time and has alarms and stopwatch features. I like the wrist band (double prong catches instead of typical single) Also the fact that you really need to push the buttons on the watch to change settings- you aren't going to change them in the course of just normal hard work or leaning on them like some other watches I have had. The fact that it is solar and won't need a watch battery after a year or so is also appealing. I never take the watch off and it has readjusted to the atomic time on it's own- I sleep right by a large window though. I use it for scuba diving as well. So far I am very happy with it. Recommended for someone who is tough on watches and needs a dependable timepiece without breaking the bank.
Anyone who knows G-shocks, this is one to have; and for the first time buyer it will not disappoint you; loads of functions, solar power, atomic sync(for time keeping), five alarms(1 with optional snooze mode),1000 hour stop watch, etc; resists mud and dirt; 200 meter, nice for diving; have used many of my G-shocks for Scuba diving; overall a excellent heavy duty, functional watch.

I sent this watch back for the pathfinder, which is very similar to this one. If you don't mind a bulky watch, these are built like a tank and automatically set themselves and charge off the sun. Put it on and forget about it.
Just received this watch today from Amazon, it was the lowest price I could find on the net or even ebay.
First, I usually don't write reviews on items I've had only one day, but I'll make an exception here because as soon as I put it on it answered several questions and maybe it will help another customer decide if this watch is for them.
This is NOT an overly huge watch, in my opinion it was just right! I have several big watches, and definitely a lot heavier ones, and I can tell that I will be wearing this one more than any other watch I have. BUT, it's not just because of the size or weight I say this, it's because this watch is VERY COMFORTABLE to wear. More so than I thought it would be.
I had it set within several minutes, just follow the directions in the booklet and BAM you've got atomic time accuracy, just like that!
And yes, I'll agree with some reviewers here and agree that the buttons are a little tough to push, but this is a minor incovenience, and shouldn't disuade someone from buying it. Please guys, stop whining and work on your finger strength.
You don't have to worry about batteries, having the wrong time, or wearing an uncomfortable watch, you can't go wrong here.
A great watch for me, seeing that I work outdoors all day and get dirty. Exactly what you come to expect from Casio. Rugged, accurate, and simple to use. Well worth the money.
